/ In our 2018 survey of 2400+ Chicago metro area adults, we asked respondents to grade a number of local agencies, including their local police department. Suburban police departments get a B- from White suburbanites, but the CPD only gets a D+ from Black Chicagoans.
/ From a survey of Chicago area high school students by @nelsen_matt, we found very low approval of police among Black & Latinx youth. Especially as Chicago debates the presence of CPD in public schools, it's important to note the intensity of disapproval among Black youth.
/ These sharp rates of disapproval among Black residents correspond with their experiences with policing. Black respondents reported experiencing each of the negative police encounters that we asked about at higher rates than all other groups.
/ Meanwhile, Black residents also report being more concerned about crime. As historian @SimonBalto writes in his indispensable book Occupied Territory, Black communities in Chicago are "both overpoliced and under-protected."
/ As activists and protesters have been saying for decades, policing in Chicago (and elsewhere in the nation) is deeply racialized. Policing does not mean the same thing in White suburbs as it does in Black neighborhoods.
