Tuning into the @ClinicalReady talk about the differences and similarities between PTSD and racial trauma. Excited to hear more from @DrJulietteM, @rahulsharmapsyd, and Dr. Carie Rogers.
. @DrJulietteM discussing how EBP is largely based on traumatic events that are in the past, hence the "post" label in PTSD. What about racial trauma where there are ongoing stressors? Responses to racial trauma are largely adaptive (e.g., avoiding police)
Carie Rodgers also points to the problems with a “post” label as part of PTSD as it does not take into account instances such as domestic violence or ongoing systemic challenges related to race, gender, etc.
. @DrJulietteM highlights a major gap in the literature: CPT, PE may, in fact, be effective for racial trauma but we don't have the data to know what is and is not EBP for this group
In the therapy room, White clinicians need to be cognizant of what should be considered adaptive responses to threat. E.g., reducing anxiety to police presence via thought records is invalidating and not protective
. @rahulsharmapsyd: cultural competence (attitudes, knowledge, skills) via workshops is essential but not enough if we haven’t done work on our own biases. Recommends White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo.
Follows up by saying that if your BIPOC clients feel like they can’t “go there” re: race with you, there’s a problem
. @DrJulietteM identifies the need for better training on how to integrate aspects of culture, race, gender, etc into both research and clinical work
Dr. Rogers says it’s not all about sxs that fit in a book - we need to be open to client goals, re-ax, checking-in
When asked about EBP for racial trauma, @DrJulietteM points to 1) validation of the client's experience, 2) psychoed on calming the nervous system post-threat (e.g., police car has passed), 3) opportunities for group and social support, esp for folx from collectivist cultures
Another book recc from @rahulsharmapsyd: Connecting Across Cultures: The Helper's Toolkit by Pamela Hays which uses an intersectional approach

. @DrJulietteM ends by saying that racism shouldn't be in the DSM - we can't pathologize systemic issues. Also: read the works of Black authors (e.g., Audre Lorde, Angela Davis, @IjeomaOluo, @DrIbram. Highlights the need to listen to different perspectives and lived experiences.
What an amazing webinar! So much useful info in 1 hour. Thank you to @ClinicalReady for putting this together. Looking forward to future opportunities to learn more about anti-racist practices for clinicians and researchers.
