hi everyone♥️
i just wanted to make a little thread to respond to most of the comments and feedback i’ve been receiving in response to my atla fancast, if any of you are interested in reading it haha
firstly i just want to say thank you for everyone’s comments and responses, both negative and positive. i honestly did not expect this thread to get as much attention as it did. so thank you.
i know a lot of my casting choices were inaccurate and not representative of the races and cultures that the characters were based off of—namely the water tribe—and i am so sorry if any of my choices offended anyone or contributed to the erasure of native representation
i have since deleted the parts of the thread where i (very wrongly) casted asian actors to play the water tribe characters. i know that simply deleting the tweets won’t do anything, but hopefully it won’t validate anyone’s very incorrect idea that pocs are interchangeable.
to everyone that has responded about how inuit actors and actresses should be casted to play sokka, katara, and the rest of the water tribe—i hear you, and i agree with you completely.
when i had originally searched for inuit actors for the water tribe, i couldn’t find anyone remotely age appropriate (i know my casting still wasn’t very age appropriate, but i will get to that point later).
when i couldn’t find any inuit actors, i had the terrible misjudgement to use asian actors that i had thought /looked/ like the characters i casted them as. that i was a gross misstep on my part, and for that i sincerely apologize.
people of color have been overlooked in media for WAY too long, and it needs to come to an end now. POCS ARE ALSO NOT INTERCHANGEABLE.
i thought that using (sort of) known asian actors in my fan cast would be an innocent display of appreciation for the show and not carry any actual weight, but that fact that my thread has received this much attention has disproved my naïve and incorrect thoughts.
no matter my intentions, by inappropriately substituting pocs for other pocs, i have contributed to the false idea that it is okay to misrepresent certain cultures in media, the same cultures that have been forgotten and overlooked for way to long.
and i have also disrespected the integrity of this amazing show and its characters. i apologize for everything that i have done, and i promise that i will do everything i possibly can to rectify my mistakes.
a plea to @netflix: the live action atla series has the perfect opportunity to cast ethnically appropriate people and raise awareness to cultures that have been grossly overlooked by hollywood for way too long. please, please, PLEASE do this. give poc actors their chance to shine
i am deeply and sincerely sorry that i have participated in this erasure by incorrectly fancasting, and i wholeheartedly apologize to anyone and everyone that i have offended. we have to do our part to raise awareness and drill that into the minds of hollywood casting directors.
every single person of color deserves accurate representation in the media.
as for the ages of the actors i had chosen: i was well aware that all of the actors i had picked were on the older side. when making this fancast, i imagined all of the characters to be aged up by a few of years, since every character seemed so much older than they actually are.
again, this was another misstep on my part, and i did not mean to insult the integrity or genius of the show in anyway. i had simply just fancasted with the idea in my head that they were older, and it shone through in my fancasting decisions.
also, the “jackson wang as prince zuko” has received A LOT of attention, and i just wanted to say that i was not serious AT ALL about this casting choice. i love jackson wang and i love prince zuko, and i knew that no matter who i put as prince zuko, everyone would disagree.
anyways, no real person could ever live up to the greatness that is the broody bad boy king of the redemption arc prince motherfuckin zuko.
also when i saw jackson wang’s 100 ways music video i lowkey got fire nation vibes. anyone else? no? just me? okay. but yeah, that was not meant to be serious at all and i have loved reading all of the outrage :)
thank you to everyone that has read through this thread. i pray @netflix does a MUCH better job casting than i did.
