What are some clear concrete examples of atomization? Some of mine, in no particular order:

• Elder loneliness
• Declining birth rates in industrialized countries
• Hikkikomoriism
• Replacing direct w/ electronic interaction
• Unraveling of local community
...
• Less intergenerational interaction
• Replacing interpersonal with fictional interaction (e.g. watching Netflix/Twitch instead of having friends)
• Lack of friends post college
• Less sex
• Shorter relationships (both romantic & platonic)
• More changing of jobs
• Reduction in 'third spaces' (e.g. the bar/cafe where you're a regular)
• Fewer siblings
• More conflict avoidance (appearing as 'lack of conflict')
• Less trust in local authorities
• Fewer local leaders
• Systems bureaucratic rather than human by default
Used to agree with you, and when parents etc would tell me to ‘get out and socialize’ I’d tell them that AIM was a social medium. But while electronic methods have advantages and might someday be adequate to be a non-lossy replacement for in-person, they’re just not there yet.
