Hong Kong Q&A Thread:

Q1: Is Hong Kong a democracy?
A: Hong Kong has never had a real democracy, neither under British rule or Chinese rule. Leaders have always been chosen/vetted by outsiders.

Q2: But isn’t China communist?
A: Only in name. China is part of global capitalism.
Q3: Aren’t Hong Kongers all rich?
A: The majority of Hong Kongers are working class, like in any capitalist society. Wages are very low for locals.

The average square footage of a Hong Kong apartment is under 150 sq feet. Hong Kong has the highest housing prices in the world.
Q4: Are Hong Kongers racist?
A: Certainly some are. There is widespread resentment at Mainland folks because they are seen as the colonizers.

Q5: Isn’t Hong Kong just a Chinese city?
A: It is uniquely multicultural and preserves the Cantonese language and traditional culture.
Q6: Don’t Hong Kongers support Trump?
A: Hong Kongers are exceedingly (dangerously) focused on practical alliances. Since the global Left ignores them, they court the American/Western political elite. Trump happens to be in power. Many Hong Kongers are vocally opposed to this.
Q7: Don’t Hong Kongers want to return the city to British/Western rule?
A: No. The “flag waving” you see is done mostly to remind the British political elite of their historical abandonment of HK, and to piss off Beijing authorities.
Q8: What is “One Country, Two Systems”?
A: Hong Kong was handed back to the Chinese in 1997 with the British colonial “System” left in tact and promised to continue for 50 years. Universal suffrage was also promised. The Hong Kong “System” is controlled by Chinese authorities.
Q9: Who is Joshua Wong? Is he the leader of the protests?
A: Joshua Wong is a young activist from Hong Kong who was given a lot of media attention. He is just one voice of many.

Hong Kong’s movement is explicitly Leaderless and Decentralized.
Q10: Isn’t Hong Kong capitalist?
A: Yes, it is a key city in global capitalism. Hong Kong functions as a financial interface between the Chinese economy and the global economy. This is how the British built it, and why the Chinese have preserved the HK financial markets/currency.
Q11: If Hong Kongers are fleeing to Western countries, aren’t they privileged?
A: People of Hong Kong and surrounding areas have long emigrated to the West for political refuge. Western Chinatowns were built by the same labour waves that built Hong Kong. Our history is diasporic.
Q12: Are Hong Kongers in close proximity to Whiteness?
A: As a former British colony, many Hong Kongers know English & understand colonial/white mindsets. However, we “decolonize” and make it our own via “Konglish” and have created a unique hybrid culture. Flexibility = survival.
Q13: Why do so many Western alt-right voices claim to support Hong Kong?
A: Because it is convenient to deflect the problems of American/Western racism and police brutality onto China. Because it is easy to frame Hong Kong as the “good Asians” as they attack Chinese people.
Q14: What about Black Lives Matter?
A: Hong Kongers are no strangers to police violence. Many support Black Lives Matter; those who hesitate to speak up are convinced that they will lose the key support of Americans/Westerners if they are too vocal. This is alt-right influence.
Q15: But how come Hong Kong police haven’t shot/killed/hurt anyone in over a year of protests?
A: They have. They have killed, blinded, raped, and “suicided” countless young protestors at this point. Please look it up. Hundreds were arrested. Many were tortured.
