Let me share some fun trivia about Atlanta’s once-preeminent conservative talk radio host, the @Talkmaster, the High Priest of the Church of the Painful Truth, libertarian-turned-Trump-supporter...
Neal Adolph Boortz, Jr.
Yes, that’s right. *Adolph*.

First off, if you are unfamiliar with the @Talkmaster or the Boortz Institute for Insensitity Training (his term), here is a sampling of Tweets he’s published over the last couple of years, up to and including last month.

The names of Sean Patrick Hannity or Rush Hudson Limbaugh III are no secret, but Neal A. Boortz is historically very cagey and defensive about the meaning behind that ‘A’. He responds to skepticism about it with odd demands of high-dollar escrowed bets.

Neal has never produced any documentation reflecting his claims about his middle name, but he has explicitly claimed the A stands for nothing at all, and that it doesn’t even have a period.

However, when Boortz formally writes his own name, he uses a period an awful lot. Even in his own letterhead and law firm name (which also solidly establishes that he is, in fact, a “Jr.”).

Neal once directly told Creative Loafing Editor John Sugg that his grandfather’s name was “John August Boortz,” and his father, the Sr. to his Jr., was “Neal August Boortz.”
This was false.
6/
This was false.
6/
Because when Neal’s grandfather died in 1961, the name on his Texas death certificate wasn’t “John August Boortz.”
It was John Adolph Boortz.

It was John Adolph Boortz.

Admittedly, if you look at the WWII draft registration for John’s son, Neal’s father, *there* it gives his name as John August Boortz.
But that same draft card shows Neal’s dad as being Neal Adolph Boortz. Not August.
And it’s even *signed* by “Neal Adolph Boortz.”

In 1945, four years after that draft card was signed, Neal Jr. was born. And three years after that, in 1948, a genealogy book was published that included both father and son.
Who are identified, respectively, as “Capt. Neal Adolph Boortz” and “Neal Adolph Boortz, Jr”.

The Texas Dept. of State Health Services has indexes of marriage licenses online. And it shows a Sep. 1966 wedding between Karen Landry and “Neal Adolph Boorty, Jr.”
The local Eagle newspaper spelled his surname right: Boortz.

This marriage was while Neal was a student at Texas A&M.
Where, as was discovered by USMC Cpl. Frank Kaner (ret.), he was apparently registered as Neal Adolph Boortz, Jr.

Around the time he started at Texas A&M, Neal also registered with the United States Selective Service.
As Neal Adolph Boortz, Jr.

Why this multigenerational use of the same German name? Presumably because Neal’s great-grandfather, John’s father, was Adolph Eduard Boortz, born in Texas in 1856. A first-generation American.

And it’s funny that Neal should be so circumspect about his middle name. After all, he’s been so fond of using *other* people’s awkward middle names...

Now, none of this *necessarily* contradicts Neal’s claim to John Sugg that his birth certificate mistakenly says “Neal A Boortz Jr.”
But if that’s true, it means Neal *chose* to use the name “Adolph.” Again and again.
So if his BC just says ‘A’, that choice looks far worse.

As someone who was once a big fan of his, and who has watched Neal descend into bigoted Trumpism, it would be satisfying to see Wikipedia forever reflect his full name: “Neal Adolph Boortz, Jr.”
And if he wants to cough up that $10k, I won’t say no.
