We must recognize that our identities as Filipino/a/xs are inherently political. Even the creation of our Fil Am orgs is a political statement. It says we are Filipino & we are here. Our orgs would not exist if not for Filipinos fighting for their right to assemble & be in groups
Today our kababayan in the Philippines are being punished with brutality for collectively taking action to fight for justice, food, mass testing, COVID-19 relief, press freedom, livelihood, & housing.
We are here in the US with our Filipino orgs big & strong & "proud to be Filipino" but where is Filipino pride being channeled if it is not in solidarity and support for our Filipinos at home in the Philippines?
I'm just presenting us with a challenge. A war is being waged against the poor in the Philippines. this is not about political parties, this is about this is about human rights. We must use our platforms as Fil Am youth to uplift the calls of our people at home.
Individual platforms are OK, but statements are STRONGER when made by ORGANIZATIONS, bc they represent a group of people. It shows an organized & collective stance as Filipino Americans that we condemn the actions being done by the PH gov under Duterte to violate human rights.
The Anti-Terror Bill, unless vetoed by Duterte, WHICH IS HIGHLY UN-FUCKING-LIKELY, will lapse into law on July 9, 17 days away. All the noise is needed to stop this. Pressure everywhere needs to be given. I can't make this whole ass thread without telling y'all what u could do:
1: WRITE A STATEMENT AS AN ORGANIZATION. I will repeat: statements by organizations express a united & collective stance as Filipino Americans that we condemn the Anti-Terror Bill, & condemn all the atrocities of the Duterte gov on the Filipino masses, especially the poor
2: TAKE LEGISLATIVE ACTION: support advocacy for Philippine Human Rights Act (PHRA) legislation basically to cut US military & police aid to the PH until we know fa'sho that human rights are upheld & responsible violators are held accountable learn more http://humanrightsph.org
engage your legislators & tell them how terrible the human rights situation is in the Philippines & why we need to suspend US aid there. it's wild, like we're in the midst of the pandemic & Duterte gov is just slaying everyone who is like "We're hungry" or "we need jobs."
another part of this is AS ORGANIZATIONS, endorse the Philippine Human Rights Act!
3: Engage your local governments to pass city resolutions supporting Philippine Human Rights Act, condemning Anti-Terror Bill, the human rights violations, & Duterte's de-facto martial law & dictatorship. ESPECIALLY if you are in a city with a high concentration of Filipinos.
4: JOIN A PROTEST ACTION OR ORGANIZE ONE! with your orgs of course! Protests are a show of force, a show of people power. Confront the powers that be & let em know that WE HAD ENOUGH. Have a speak out, a vigil, even a "party." Have y'all seen that mañanita in the Philippines? 💯
5: JOIN AN ORGANIZATION. If you're not part of one, there's so many orgs & alliances to get involved in. Being in an organization is a show of collective power. Our voices are louder when there are more.
