Saw #GetSplitOffNetflix was making its rounds, and wanted to add our voice.
We’ve been told “it’s fiction, let it go.” Yes, it’s fiction, but it doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Fiction like this draws upon and amplifies the fear in general population, often to a violent degree. (1/9)
#GetSplitOffNetflix There’s already violent underlying misconceptions about folks with DID, violent systems in place to demonize, institutionalize, and harm us. Split uses these to create a market for its audience, and to ultimately reinforce these perceptions and actions. (2/9)
#GetSplitOffNetflix Especially when Split is marketed as a “excellent, well researched portrayal of DID” it means that those enacting the violence will view it and think “I was right. These people ARE monsters, and we should continue pushing them out of society and harming them.”
#GetSplitOffNetflix I remember when Split came out, I had to comfort many folks with DID as they were subjected to verbal abuse, being cut off from family, or allegations that they were dangerous monsters after people around them saw Split for the first time. (4/9)

One acquaintances’ sister saw Split, and afterwards, decided her sibling with DID was no longer safe around her child. The acquaintance wasn’t allowed to see their niece anymore.

This movie has real-life consequences. This is one story of many. (5/9)
#GetSplitOffNetflix when those enacting violence against people with DID have their views confirmed and enforced by major media, they WILL enact more violence to a higher degree.

Others may decide that this is finally the time to start acting on their violent mindset. (6/9)
#GetSplitOffNetflix - Split is a movie reinforcing and encouraging a larger system of oppression against those with DID. It will continue to legitimize harm against people with DID. People will get hurt, people who are already hurting to an incredible degree. @netflix

DID has a 72% attempted suicide rate. 7 of 10 people with DID will attempt to take their own lives.

This is one more straw on the camels back, and the harm Split causes could be the straw to break it for some folks with DID.

Take Split off @netflix. Please.
(9/9) And for anyone wondering, we’ve written about the larger system of violence and oppression people with DID experience here: https://twitter.com/TheRingsSystem/status/1240333739412066305?s=20
