t/w: r*pe, false allegations.

some figures on the misrepresented subject of false r*pe allegations, and why you shouldn’t try and discredit a r*pe allegation, just because they’re your fave:
•an official Home Office source found that 2-10% of r*pe accusations have proven to be false in the UK in the past 20 years.
•evidence from the FBI backs these figures up - they put the number of cases determined to be false after investigation at 8%.
•more recent data from the Home Office puts the figure at 4%, whilst studies across Europe put the number somewhere between 2% and 6%.
•of course, these false accusations will have been devastating for this innocent percentage, and i am in no way trying to discredit their experience. the issue is that people are acting as if the majority of r*pe accusations are false, which is entirely untrue.
•miscarriages of justice, whereby people wrOngly accused of r*pe get sent to jail, are over-represented in the media. in reality, a British Home Office study found that in the early 2000s, of the 216 false accusation cases reported, only 6 led to arrest, and just 2 had charges-
-brought against them, which were then dropped as the allegations were found to be false. again, not discrediting the awful experience of those wrongfully convicted, but the idea that they will face arrest and jail time is, on the whole, completely unfounded.
•false r*pe allegations almost never have serious consequences. the narrative of these ruining lives, and thus being a universal risk to men is baseless. don’t use this over-represented minority to discredit the stories of victims that bravely come forward.
•official figures also suggest that the number of r*pes and sexual assaults which are never reported or prosecuted far outweigh the number of men convicted of r*pe because of fake accusations, and the number of false allegations overall.
•the US Bureau of Justice Statistics suggests that just 35% of all sexual assaults are even reported to the police. in the UK, only around 15% of those who experience sexual violence report to the police.
•therefore in total: 85% of those who experience sexual violence do not report it to the police. 15% do. of the minority that do report, just 6% are false. so 6% of the 15% of the 100% of sexual assault cases are false. this is an extreeeeme minority.
•so, before you try and defend your fave, whether it be ansel elgort or cole sprouse, or another privileged rich man who is likely to get away with sexual assault if he’s not held accountable, maybe consider these statistics.
•if you hear about an allegation, and ur first thought is ‘if the victim’s lying, they should face the same jail time as the r*pist’ maybe logically consider what you’ve read above, and ask urself why you’re more intent on believing the r*pist is innocent than the victim.
•and if you are intent on following the law of ‘innocent until proven guilty’ in regards to the accused, please also keep this energy with the victim - if you attempt to shame them, degrade them, or hate on them for coming forward, then you are a hypocrite.
•false r*pe allegations are an overwhelming minority of all reported sexual assault cases. they are over-represented in the media, and are often used to fear-monger people into victim-blaming. please do not fall into this trap. the majority of r*pe allegations are truthful.
hold r*pists accountable. rich, famous white men are not an exception. your ‘unproblematic’ fave is not an exception.
