I know exactly why the coronavirus is spreading in Nevada. We got notified yesterday (Sunday) that we were exposed and need to be tested. You can't get tested asymptomatically on Sunday, but we were told to go to a local urgent care this morning, early.
So we wake up early, pile everyone into the car, and go to the urgent care drive-through test center. There's one car there ahead of us. "Do you have symptoms?" I say no, but we were exposed and have the official letter to get tested.
"We can only test you if you're symptomatic," she says. "But Wal-Mart down the street has asymptomatic testing Mondays from 7-9am." I'm floored. We're here, but they won't do it. We go to Walmart.
It's hidden around the back, no signs to get you there. We find it, drive up, and all the signs say you need an appointment. We go on the website, you can't get a same-day appointment. By now I'm furious. There is literally nobody in the line. I pull up, ask, nope.
We call the @WashoeHealth department. Can't get through. Go on their website, which had the worst internet form in the history of internet forms. Doesn't work on mobile or desktop. Now my husband is on hold over the phone.
The website only accepts local phone numbers as valid numbers. The website rejected as an "invalid email" the email that they ALREADY USED TO CONTACT ME ABOUT HAVING BEEN EXPOSED.
Dear @WashoeHealth @GovSisolak and anyone else who will listen, what gives? My kids are getting on a plane Wednesday per my custody agreement. We're trying to get tested because we found out Sunday we were exposed, but it seems impossible. This is why it's spreading.
And when I called the urgent care back like the Karen I can be sometimes to tell them to stop sending people over to Walmart, the gal on the other end said "well, thank God we're closing this location July 1 so we won't have to deal with it after that."
So @gaonin60secs just got off the phone (took an hour) with the health department. The kids are going on a plane, untested, because they can't get an appointment and results before Wednesday. So my apologies in advance to anyone they may infect. I tried.
Hey @rgj @brianduggan, this was our experience this morning trying to get tested after we were informed by @WashoeHealth that we were exposed last week at my kids' pediatrician's office. And we got apathy when I said my kids are traveling by plane Wednesday.
The @WashoeHealth said that our best bet was for (the adults only, not the kids who will be flying Wednesday) to go to Reed tomorrow and wait in line for testing at the free testing drive. No matter what, we have to put them on the plane Wednesday without being tested.
Update: got a call through the (great, amazing) pediatrician that the kids can't fly until after they get a negative result, and @WashoeHealth wanted her to reach out to me over it. So now we're moving flights and getting appointments. What a cluster.
Things are starting to move, but I just have to say: I'm a white, upper middle class woman with a graduate degree and it took all of this to get *appointments* to get tested in the second biggest city in my state. What chance do others have?
And now that he's off the phone, I can report that we are now *assessed* by @washoehealth and now we are allowed to go back online and make an appointment for the kids. They're still recommending that we adults go to the free clinic. Y'all.
