hot take: I (kind of) support bowds decision to limit the # of students on campus and I think the other colleges shouldve done the same instead of opening their campuses. I only agree with the some of public health side, the rest is shit.
colleges closed their campuses when there were less than 5000 cases mid March. why should they be reopening if there are over 2.3 mil cases in the US, we have not completely flattened the curve, ppl arent wearing masks/physical distancing, and we are expecting a 2nd wave?
if you were criticizing states for reopening, have the same energy for colleges. things aren& #39;t reopening bc its safe, they& #39;re doing it bc they need the money. but bowd asking for $30k still proves they care more abt money than the economic reality of students
the tradeoffs for reopening campuses are increases in covid cases and deaths. Maine has the highest elderly population by % completely reopening bowd would be a terrible public health decision. unless there is a vaccine, its impossible for bowd to maintain an isolated bubble
"In contrast, 20.6% of Maine’s population was age 65 or older, the highest share of any state" (PRB)

"The overall cumulative COVID-19 hospitalization rate is 94.5 per 100,000, with the highest rates in people aged 65 years and older (286.9 per 100,000) and 50-64 years (143.0 per 100,000)." (CDC) https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/covid-data/covidview/index.html">https://www.cdc.gov/coronavir...
"In SK, where diagnostic testing has been...available to people with no symptoms, nearly 27 % of the confirmed cases are people in their 20s, by far the age group with the most infections. That suggests young adults may be spreading COVID-19 without realizing it." (UCSF)
from other college statements, they plan on heavily increasing santitation. the majority of employees are the age of the at risk population. if you& #39;re advocating for living wage for employees, what& #39;s the point if your return to campus is at the risk of their health/life?
I understand the frustration/anxiety/sadness ppl have abt bowd& #39;s response. there are a lot of personal reasons as to why I would want campus to open back up, but I cannot in good conscience walk on campus knowing that I could be putting someone else& #39;s life in danger
aside from my support for bowd& #39;s public health decision, they are tone deaf to the needs of all their students bc:

1) they& #39;re asking $30k for khan academy during an economic depression 2) it hurts students who pay for their tuition and their income comes from bowd employment
3) they say students may come back if home situations are "nearly impossible" for conducive learning, but its like talking to a brick wall to convince admin that home isnt safe 4) intl students cant defer semesters bc of their f1 visas and timezone
they shouldve just closed the semester or until a vaccine comes out. rn their decision just says "we need money, but stay away bc we kinda care abt ppls lives" basically a "liberal" democrat that is fiscally conservative
