Progressives threaten the social, cultural, and economic status of those who refuse to affirm their dogmas. It is not enough to sit quietly in your corner. You must actively participate in their project to maintain your status. I watched them take over the universities. https://twitter.com/yhazony/status/1273744651418206209
They rarely had intellectual clout. The smartest academics - the best scholars - always understood that a hunger for power drove the Progressives, not a thirst for knowledge. But the best scholars craved a quiet life, so they sat in their corner & let the Progressives take over.
Plus, scholars are, if I may be permitted a gross generalization, a vain lot. They are sponges for praise. The Progressives were happy to give them that, provided they made space for them. So an alliance was forged between the lovers of fame and the lovers of power.
In this way, a relatively small number, proportionally speaking, of Progressives would take over whole departments. From their they would start filling all new positions with their candidates. The techniques that we are witnessing in liberal institutions, the media, and in
our politics, began on university campuses. If you get in their way, they scour your record and discover the sentence you wrote in 2002, or the argument you made in 2009, or the accusation that was levelled against you in 1997, or the accusation that is levelled against you now
about 1997 -- they discover the fact that reveals the true essence of your bigoted soul, the original sin from which you can be absolved only by stepping aside now, making no claims on power, and apologizing for your sin.
At any given moment they appear to be motivated purely by the issue at hand -- by the "evidence" before them -- not by a larger power agenda. Indeed, they often believe themselves at any given moment to believe onlly the "evidence" at hand. But if you watch them over time
you see that the standards of evidence are infinitely malleable and the hierarchy of priorities is always changing. One thing is always a constant: they get to make the decisions, not you.
