Lately I& #39;ve been thinking a lot about Jiang Cheng becoming Chief Cultivator. I know that Nie Huaisang is a popular choice, but he just doesn& #39;t strike me as someone whose ambition is power, or who would want the added duties and responsibilities of a Chief Cultivator.
Lan Wangji is off running around with Wei Wuxian, who wants nothing to do with cultivation world politics if he can help it, so Lan Zhan isn& #39;t gonna take the position and spend his time navigating politics instead of spending it with Wei Ying.
Lan Xichen, even if he wasn& #39;t in
seclusion, he was a big supporter of Jin Guangyao, including his more unpopular projects, so would the cultivation world really trust him? Probably not. Knowing how close he was to JGY, people would either say that he is incompetent for not noticing anything or at worst,
complicit.
( I briefly considered Lan Qiren, but I don& #39;t see it happening: he isn& #39;t a sect leader and if he wasn& #39;t picked before (when JGY got the position) then he probably wouldn& #39;t be picked now. + I think he would prefer to focus on the Lan sect, even if he was offered the
position.)
The Jin sect is obviously out, both because of JGY and because of Jin Ling& #39;s age and experiece, which leaves the Jiang sect.
The Jiang sect is the only great sect that is not directly connected to JGY& #39;s schemes (WWX disowned himself a long time ago) and if we look at
Jiang Cheng& #39;s public image (especially as compared to NHS& #39;s), he would be the best choice.
JGY& #39;s getting exposed must have rocked the cultivation world, it is a true disaster: the Jin sect is crumbling, the Lan sect& #39;s leader is in seclusion (the Lan sect might be turning inward)
, their reputation plummeted, the people who exposed JGY ran off and left the cultivation in shambles, plus the Yiling Patriarch is back but now he& #39;s good???
In this situation I would be looking towards the guy who proved that he can handle disasters, who brought back his sect
from the brink of destruction. If anyone could restore the Chief Cultivator& #39;s office(?)& #39;s respectability and stabilise the situation in the cultivation world, it would be him. (+they could get to dump all the hard work on him, lazy assholes)
Jiang Cheng also has a reputation
for hating demonic cultivation, so that& #39;s a guarantee that there would be none of that going on while he& #39;s in office. Plus, he is very straightforward so there would be no games, no schemes and after JGY, I think people would appreciate that (sorry NHS).
Out of all the
plausible candidates, Jiang Cheng 100% has the best credentials and is the most reliable and responsible. Plus, he would definitely take the position if offered to him, because he already has a personal stake in cleaning up JGY& #39;s mess, Jin Ling.
And sure, he could be accused with being biased here, but his bias is not necessarily a bad thing. The Jin sect would need to be stabilised anyway, I don& #39;t think its fall is in the interest of any of the great sects& #39; : it would only result in chaos in the area under their
jurisdiction, the fallout of which the great sects, or at least the chief cultivator, would need to deal with anyway. Jin Ling& #39;s relationship to Jiang Cheng would also guarantee a personal supervision on the cleansing of the Jin sect and would make sure that Jin Ling grows into a
capable sect leader in his own right (yay stability!). Plus, as I mentioned, Jiang Cheng would be personally invested in making sure that all of JGY& #39;s supporters are brought to justice. There would be justice, but without the risk of another Wen remnant incident.
So in conclusion, considering the tasks of pursuing justice, stabilizing the cultivation world and restoring respectability to the Chief Cultivator& #39;s Office(?), Jiang Cheng is the absolute best candidate and he should get the job.
