Experts explained that it’s the unfortunate result of a complicated, layered web spun from the historical emasculation of Asian men, fetishization of Asian women and the collision of sexism and racism in the U.S.

. @nancywyuen told me that the emasculation of AAPI men has beginnings that stretch back to early immigration laws and anti-miscegenation that created a "bachelor society," making it almost impossible for AAPI men to marry Asian women and illegal to marry white women.

Hollywood only confirmed these images, molding the portrayals of the Asian men with wars that were being fought. simultaneously, Asian women were seen as "spoils of war."

. @NAPAWF exec direc. Sung Yeon Choimorrow told me The burden placed on Asian American women to date within their own race also presents another problematic idea: that women are still thought of as property.

It’s just another form of toxic masculinity, Choimorrow said, as the expectation that Asian women date Asian men means there is no agency in their dating choices. It’s a mentality that has been inherited through our heritages, she added.
