Recently, @LGBTpoliceuk have been tweeting their support for the LGBT+ community. They've had some negative comments about it. To my mind, the work that @LGBTpoliceuk are doing is vital to upholding a fundamental principle of policing, which is to maintain at all times...
"a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and that the public are the police", the police being "only members of the public who are paid to give full time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen".
At a time when the LGBT+ community faces significant threats - not least from shocking rates of hate crime - we need UK police forces to stand with us. LGBT police officers know this better than most, and I am so grateful for the important work that they are doing.
