How was your Father's Day? Mine was FATHER'S DAY FISHING TRIP BECOMES RESCUE AT SEA, when 35 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico yesterday morning, we saw a bright white object waving frantically in the distance....
Veering off course to check it out, we came upon a dad, mom and three boys aged 12, 8 and 4 submerged up to their necks in a drift of seaweed - the youngest, floating inside a large cooler whose white lid had been their signalling device....
After pulling their exhausted bodies into our boat, the parents, Kyle and Kayla, told us how their boat had sunk into 65 feet of water an hour and a half before sunset the previous day when their bilge pump had failed....
The boat sank so fast they had little time to grab anything more than each other, their life vests and that cooler. Imagine the horror of realizing you would be spending the night like that....

...but 12-year-old David said that at least the seaweed kept them warmer. As we offered food on the boat, David said, "I still have these," as he held up a small bag of yogurt pretzels soaked in sea water which they had been rationing...
Eight year old, Aiden was so exhausted, he could barely speak or hold his eyes open. Not only is it Father's Day, but today is the mom's birthday. As the sun rose, they all said "Happy Birthday Mom," just happy to be alive.
