some clown somehow decided that the term "shounen ai" (literally translated: boys love) was coined by people in the west that don't know what it means and that it has pedophilic context, and I am here to provide actual context I found after scrounging around (1/?) https://twitter.com/mxfotia/status/1274861854939058176
The origin of the term 民ćčŽæ„› had ORIGINALLY referred to "romantic/sexual relations between an adult male and pre-pubescent boy", and was a terminology used by historians, directly relating to the Pedastery term English historians use.

The first instance of the term used in creative works in Japan was by Inagaki Taruho, a male novelist who published a philosophical work titled "The Aesthetics of Boy Love" (民ćčŽæ„›ăźçŸŽćŠ) where he explored a whole bunch of things regarding the love of beautiful boys (3/?)
His work inspired the works of mangaka like Takemiya Emiko in the 70s/80s, who then carried on to use the term specifically to refer to love stories BETWEEN youthful males

The term was later merged with nsfw/adult themed content (then referred to as yaoi) in the 90s into the all encompassing "Boys' Love ăƒœăƒŒă‚€ă‚șăƒ©ăƒ–" and is the term that is most commonly actively used now to refer to this genre (both nsfw and sfw works)

tl;dr "shounen ai" is a JAPANESE term with DEEP HISTORICAL REFERENCE to EARLY MALE HOMOEROTIC WORKS and NOT APPROPRIATED BY WESTENERS THAT DON'T UNDERSTAND!? where the fuck do clowns get their information???
btw off tangent but the difference between gaycomi and BL is the thematic direction usually. BL tend to, as lending to its origins as a branch of shoujo manga, focus on aesthetics and romance (yes, INCLUDING the pwp content - do compare pwp BL with gaycomi, it's diff!)
anyway really good thread https://twitter.com/_queerioes/status/1141394296421126144?s=19
