I hope this comes out right and I'll try to be as concise as possible. A thread regarding some wrestlers using mental health as an excuse for their actions relating to #SpeakingOut. I have a mental health issue for the last couple years known as dissociative disorder.
This is when certain emotions become too much for me, my mind switches off. This ends with 2 possible things. Either:
1. I collapse and I'm out cold for a few minutes.
Or 2. I have an episode where I lash out verbally on people around me, become suicidal and eventually collapse.
Now obviously the 2nd one is the worse of the two and when I come round I have no memory of what's happened. However the people around me do and they explain what I've done or said. They excuse it as "it's not you speaking, it's the dissociative disorder causing it"
However I feel guilty about it, because no matter what, I've still said those words and tried to kill myself in front of them. Those thoughts and words, no matter how deep into my subconscious they are, have still been in my head.
And this is where I come to those wrestlers who have used their position to abuse others. Yes they may have a mental health issue, but somewhere in their heads they've still had the thoughts to do what they've done and acted on it.
To use their mental health as a crutch, an excuse, for what they've done passes the blame for their actions. Accept responsibility for your actions and it becomes a stepping stone for you to improve as a person. Find an excuse and you'll go back to where you were.
I hope this comes across in the way I've intended. All my sympathy goes out to the victims who've bravely told their stories over the last few days. I love pro wrestling and it needs to be better for the sake of the industry and the people in it
