I don't have a business degree!

But I've made over $10k online.

Here's how I'd advise a friend to start a business without VC funding.

THREAD 👇
1) Read Mindset by Carol Dweck.

You really can't grow a business until you can believe you can.

Believing is the first step.
5) Look at problems in your own life and solve them

That's why I made @nocsdegree

I was learning to code and wanted inspiration from people without CS degrees. I studied Politics and Spanish
6) Solve VALUABLE problems

Not all problems are created equally.

Lots of people want to code and get good jobs.

That's a valuable problem.
7) Join a supportive community where making money is encouraged

- @GetMakerlog
- @wip
- @ProductHunt
- @IndieHackers
8) Find people on Twitter you can look up to and follow their tips.

Some people I admire and follow are

@anthilemoon
@thepatwalls
@levelsio
10) Make a newsletter - important!

You control how you contact people and you aren't relying on Facebook group, for example

Mailchimp has 2,000 contacts for free
Email Octopus is simpler but fewer tutorials for it
11) Once you get a few hundred subscribers, ask people to sponsor your newsletter.

They'll ask for open rate and click through rate (CTR)
12) get a Stripe account and start charging money - if you can't code, use @CheckoutPage to take payments
13) Sell to businesses if possible

They have BIG marketing budgets.

They won't blink at giving you hundreds of dollars.

You have fewer people to reach.

And much less customer support.
14) Get a Twitter account and start sharing your successes and failures.

Most people don't have the courage to be transparent.

Be interesting in life and on Twitter.
15) Set a scary target for money.

My target is $10,000 per month by November
17) Ask people to get on their affiliate schemes.

I've made over $1,000 from just adding affiliate links to my articles on @nocsdegree
18) Become an expert in your business area

I get tagged a lot any time people mention CS degrees vs self taught devs

@levelsio is the expert on remote work

@anthilemoon is the expert on psychology

@harrydry is the expert on marketing
19) Have lots of balance in your life

Read fiction.

Exercise.

Sleep well.

This will keep you refreshed and an interesting person.

This will help your business.
20) Finally, have lots of fun!

There's no point in making a business you don't enjoy.
