I watched A Secret Love on Netflix, and I didn’t (secret) love it. It was a wasted opportunity to tell Terry and Pat’s story of falling and being in love through 6 decades in favour of focussing mostly on a somewhat manufactured tension surrounding their later life accommodation
It was odd to me the things they chose to focus on and the presence of the camera in places and at moments that it felt intrusive to be present for, like an argument over money that felt manufactured, or the emotional “arrival” of Terry’s niece when the crew were already filming
Anyway I looked it up and it was made by Terry’s great nephew. I guess the son of her niece who is positioned throughout the film as saving Terry from the, IMO unfairly and bizarrely portrayed, secretive & exclusive instincts of Pat. I hope they knew what they were getting into.
I did realise though how much I am fascinated by & desperate to know more older queer people and their stories. So much rich history of our family who came before us, who made my life so much easier & more possible. I think there are so many (better?) Secret Loves to be made
