Week 4

A thread
This week’s lesson focused on 5 moral theories which are Absolutism, Relativism, Egoism, Emotivism, and Hedonism.
These moral theories made me realize the different factors that drive and motivate a person in doing a particular moral action. It may be based on ideas and beliefs that one got from his or her society as he or she grows up.
For this reflection, I’ll be focusing on only 2 theories which are absolutism and relativism as these two strikes me the most.
In Absolutism, moral actions are motivated on absolutes sets of moral rules. To be honest, I am one of those students who doesn’t agree with this theory.
One of the reasons for this is that it goes against my viewpoint that there is such ambiguity about what is good and evil. It does not consider what a person has gone through, motivation, or the context of doing such action.
However, with that question asked on the end of the video which is “What would happen to the world without moral absolutes?”, I came to realize its importance.
I realized that some support moral absolutism because it makes the establishment of laws and the enforcement of the judiciary simple. It brings cohesion in the community that makes our lives easier and more peaceful.
Relativism claims that actions depend on certain things that may be inclined to a person’s culture. This is one of the theories that I somehow agree with.
Somehow agree? Why is that?
This theory does make people realize that we are not to judge one’s culture since we don’t know their experiences and we don’t belong to that culture. However, I do believe that at some point, value judgments should be made.
For the issue of genital mutation, I became aware of this topic back in SHS as it was discussed by one of my professors in my school. We were told that we should not judge one’s culture since it is morally and culturally acceptable to them.
However, as I continue to learn more about human rights, I came to find out that numerous women suffer from this unnecessary circumcision. Which is a no no...
Yes, perhaps, I am wrong to judge someone’s’ culture and value but how can we protect women if we allow cultures that discriminate against women?

Right?
And that’s the end of this thread
