I quit stand-up comedy and I’ve never regretted it. The whole industry is exhausting on so many fronts, especially re: sexism.
You experience it in the jokes you hear, the heckles to receive, how you’re treated by awards, venues, and ‘the old boys’. Things were definitely changing while I was still on the scene but the burden of having to drive that change, as well as form a career, is draining...
That’s to say nothing of having to learn again and again that men you used to look up to, men you even know and like, are in fact sexual predators.
The guy you met last Thursday? He sends unsolicited dick pics.
The host of that night you like? Exposed himself to a fellow comic.
The person you thought was your friend? Revenge porn.
And everyone knows all this stuff, it's talked about at every show, in every car share to a gig, when drunk after shows in Edinburgh.

Anyone in the industry who pretends they're unaware of the problem is a straight-up liar.
