We’re underway. Astonishing that it has been 2 years since the Thai Cave rescue. I still can’t fathom giving a bunch of kids an anaesthetic and submerging them. Just can’t.
Since the cave rescue ... we've had Christchurch terrorist incident, White Island eruption, bush fires, floods, pandemic. We have had to call on our resilience.

June 23 2018 was the day the boys went into the caves - two years tomorrow.
Two British cave divers were called first for the search for the boys. Harry knew both of them, ended up there via Rick. After 9/7 boys were found in chamber 9. (I still remember those images of those boys huddled together in the dark, breathtaking).
Had to prepare for the unknown. The 'all hazards' approach. Harry asked by Canberra to contribute - lessons to learn from unusual situations. A scalable approach used by all emergency services in governments, can apply to different sizes of problem. Incident management team
Lesson 1 - can't be experts at everything in an incident. Need different people with different skillsets. Engineers, hospitals, people management, cave divers, support crew. Analagous to anaesthetic departments - where we call on those with a subset of skills eg MH, airway.
Use the enthusiast when they come forward.

Harry says the worst thing is when you want to get involved in something in your department ... not embraced .... they will wander off somewhere else.

USE THE ENTHUSIAST.

(Ain't that the truth, I agree 1000% percent).
Harry started diving as a teenager. Loved it. Enthusiast. Pannikan Plains 1988 mentioned - flooded when a film crew divining, avalanche trapped them, suboptimal attempts to rescue ....

The need was created for cave rescue teams.
Harry worked in Vanuatu for 2 years. Many cases beyond comfort zone. Realised that @ANZCA training is exceptional. We have the knowledge to help the patient - if you don't do it, no-one will, and the patient will die without your help.
Power of the team and power of the individual important.
Local Thai leader was open minded and was open to invite foreign expertise to assist. Might have had a different outcome if boys died ....
