Asked dad to share some stories of why #IndianArmy is special. He came up with many experiences. Sharing one today

'My weapons Instructor in IMA was Naib Subedar Trilok Singh. His exacting standards & fairness earned great respect.

When we had to give choices of regiments, I being a south Indian insisted on the Garhwal Rifles because of the impression Trilok Singh Saab made on me.

We later served together in the same Company and when I became CO he became Subedar Major.

It was a long tenure of 41/2 years including fighting the 1971 War. The unit couldn't have had a better SM.

Trilok Singh's last posting before retirement was to NCC.

I called him over phone to ask for his address post retirement. He sounded disappointed.

'Kya Hua Saab'?
3
'Kuch Nahi Sir'. I knew Trilok was hiding something and prodded.

'Sir, socha tha 'Hon Lt ban jaoonga par suna CO ne recommend nahi kiya hai'

I was shocked. After 25 'Outstanding' reports at a stretch?

Called up Gen B M Bhattachajee MVC who was then DG NCC & told him.

'What do you think he should retire as Murphy?" he asked.

'Sir, I would like him to be Hon Capt'.

Done he said.

Trilok Saab came all the way to meet me. Tears in his eyes. I said 'Saab aap ne kamaya'

Later, Hon Capt Trilok Saab's only son joined our regiment and was martyred fighting terrorists in Operation Bluestar.

Trilok is no more now. We stayed in touch till he passed away

We fought for our country.

His son & my grandson gallantly gave their lives for country

In which other organisation is this possible?

The mutual respect and trust between soldiers of vastly different rank?

A Gen taking up for a JCO on a junior officer's insistence?

This is what is special about my #dad and #ArmedForces
