THIS I can agree on! I still think lgbt ppl should always be considered first and not the other way around. They don’t HAVE to play all gay roles and that’s the issue with you ppl, you assume a lot, nobody’s saying that -1 https://twitter.com/sulraiye/status/1274819751089328129
But to act like lgbtq ppl aren’t discriminated against & typecasted in the industry is a fucking problem. It’s the same kind of gaslighting that’s done to poc when the whitewashing conversation is brought up. -2
If “anyone can play a role” why don’t we see wayyyyy more lgbt ppl in mainstream media, casually playing more prominent roles straight or otherwise? Why arent we seeing them leading more tv roles like soap operas, thrillers, romcoms, mainstream movies, etc? -3
And please don’t come with that “Incusivity > talent” arguement bc that shit just shows your biggotry. Being so convinced minorities taking more mainstream roles will somehow lower the quality for no other reason than them being a minority is fucking prejudice. -4
I believe anyone can play a role, yes, but if cishets already get 2/3 of the pie and you start giving them pieces of the third slice, how tf can you see that as fair? To me, everybody should be able to eat from the pie, but they dont so at least give the gays their slice. -5
Everybody should be able to eat from the pie, but realistically they don’t, not proportionately so at least give the LGBTQ community their slice until we’re ALL eating from the pie equally. -6
Again, not saying cishet men can’t play gay roles, but too often are they given roles over actual lgbtq talent for a number of reasons. Mostly, bc they are more “marketable” and still have a sense of desirability to a general/mainstream audience which stifles lgbtq reach. -7
This soils the hirability of gays in the industry bc “why would we hire u when we could get a straight guy who’ll do decent and still be marketable & desirable to both straight women and gays alike” -8
Causing gays to be inclined or pressured into changing their appearance/personalities & behaviors to conform to a more masculine/generally desirable/acceptable image. Most lgbt men that land big roles hide it and don’t even come out until after so to not stifle their success. -9
This can even be compared to lgbt artists like Lil Nas X as an example who was clearly very calculated with his timing when it came to coming out. He was already a week or two away from breaking the record for the longest running # 1 song in history when he came out. -10
The gaslighting has to stop and I don’t blame ppl for wanting to see themselves represented well by their OWN ppl more in mainstream media. Nobody’s saying straights can’t/shouldn’t play gay roles, but where do we fit in the equation when they’re playing ALL the roles? -11
Also, poc baffle me when they get upset when this is compared to whitewashing. I’m black and queer so I experience both spectrums & lemme tell you.. this reminds me exactly of when I got dragged by a bunch of yt incels for claiming a character in a show was whitewashed... -12
Now I will say, yt and non-black/poc gays should keep their mouths shut when comparing queerness to black/poc issues bc they just don’t know, however for someone that is both (and because of that a double minority)... -13
It feels the same as when someone says “why do we need more black ppl just for the sake of being black? Imagine picking skin color > talent & skill that’s racist (ooh that pissed me off just typing
)” it’s so offensive & obviously prejudice (refer back to earlier in the post)-14

It’s like y’all forget black lgbt ppl exist & the same way I should NEVER have to hide or white wash my existence, my blackness to conform to european standards is the same way I should never have to hide or conform my queerness to heteronormality. I am who I am. Period. -15
And I guarantee replacing this thread of “LGBT” with “BLACK” It’ll still be spittin facts and cohesive. -16
And with that being said, as a queer myself, I will ALWAYS care more about how an LGBTQ+ person interprets an LGBTQ+ role more than any other person. As a BLACK person, I will ALWAYS care more about how a BLACK person interprets a BLACK role more than anybody else. -17
Bc we the only ones that truly know what it’s like. And as minorities, we don’t get as many opportunities to showcase these experiences and have them portrayed accurately.
-18

Anyway, that’s enough from me I’m going to sleep now lol
