this is not unpopular but whatever . one piece is one of the only anime where i have genuinely felt connected to the characters in such a way that i would deadass cry over them any day. oda’s world building is a phrase oo twt says so often because its just that fucking good + https://twitter.com/kyoajin/status/1274166916454715392
theres diversity in the body types and facial features of the characters (this is a fact, you can tell—none of them look the same) and each of them are so so beloved even if they aren’t necessarily “attractive” by standards. +
sure, one piece puts major focus on zoro sanji and luffy being monsters in battle, but a lot of focus is also put onto the strengths of the other members. usopp is introduced as a liar and someone who is inherently weak, but as he progresses oda builds his tendency to lie +
and his goals and his insecurities and makes them a part of how strong he actually is. usually, a character like usopp might be pushed aside for comedic relief—but no, instead he’s brought out as god usopp and as sogeking, and even while he grows and become stronger, +
he still carries his insecurities within him. they make up his character and thats what i really love about one piece. it’s not afraid to introduce characters who are not as strong physically and are more focused on the strength of their minds. in the alabasta arc,
nami recalls something usopp said to her while fighting baroque works. he mentions how they are both weak compared to zolusan, but that they are intelligent and strong and can work with their brains—and they can use their craft to fight back
another point is the way that oda has built out the anime. it has been running for 900+ episodes with several longer arcs and mini arcs in between—and yet oda never forgets a tiny detail that he placed in a different arc. there are never any loose ends—and if there are, oda +
closes them up. this is shown through laboon—the whale at the red line—and brook’s connection, solidifying his presence as a character. the strawhats promised to meet laboon again, and they do, albeit almost 300 episodes later.
everything always ends up connecting—the fishmen, laboon, brook, franky, sabo and dragon— everything amounts to something in one piece. if oda focuses on something, it is BOUND to re appear once again, or even multiple times in the coming episodes.
as such, one piece leaves the viewers satisfied with that—and like i’ve said before, even watching just one arc of one piece is enough to supply a whole anime. (i reccomend alabasta.) if you get hooked after one arc, watch another. if you don’t, thats totally ok.
i’ll never ever ever stop proclaiming my endless love for one piece because the anime is just That Fucking Good. it’s an anime with found family and the lack of actual romantic content makes it so nice to process the way the strawhats care for each other.
the main character is interesting—his crew is interesting, the ship is interesting. heck, the entire fucking character list, from the smaller background characters, to the larger, over the top marines and emperors are interesting. oda just makes it that way.
anyways op brainrot once again i love this anime its so dear to me 😑 i feel like i just kinned jen with this long ass thread
++ i kinda wanna elaborate more on something though : usopp isn’t the only character who bears insecurities or some other burden. some of the characters seemed to be unfazed by things at all—like zoro because hes a meathead.
zoro’s backstory isn’t all that sad : blah blah dojo kuina she fell down stairs and d!ed ( that was kind of funny but op twt might jump me ) but what i like about his character is his loyalty and his willingness to do anything for his goal. +
zoro’s real depth begins with his relationship with mihawk—because up until he meets him, zoro is hot shit and he’s a wanted bounty hunter whos just hitched a ride with some weird ass kid with a strawhat and noodle arms. +
mihawk is the world’s greatest swordsman. he can stop zoro’s swords with one, tiny knife, and probably a sewing needle if he wanted to bust zoro’s ego any further—but zoro’s refusal to turn his back to him, and his outright stubborness to let his encounter fade +
his dream of becoming the world’s best swordsman is what really gets me. because, he’s just been ripped to shreds by someone far stronger than him, and it only motivates him to train harder, and faster, until he can one day defeat him. +
and then zoro encounters mihawk again and again—until mihawk agrees to train him for two years. here is where their dysfunctional family comes into play : perona and zoro as mihawk’s two overpowered guests turned stubborn children. +
watching their dynamic is so entertaining, because perona seems to always be unphased but also slightly naggy, zoro is the same bluntheaded idiot with swords, and mihawk is the world’s most powerful swordsman who can’t handle raising two batshit crazy powerhouses.
it’s gorgeous. it’s the best thing to grace this planet. and even if you can’t directly tell, you know in between the lines that mihawk has some care in his heart for the both of them. +
zoro’s beyond his relationship with other people, though. he’s also incredibly loyal which is probably part of his raising in the dojo, but it goes to show just how strong his values truly are. at any point, zoro would be welcomed into a crew far stronger than luffy’s +
during the beginning of the show. luffy was just a kid with a lot of luck—he wasn’t necessarily very strong or powerful money wise, and they didn’t even have a ship. but zoro was adamant on staying with luffy throughout east blue, through the grand line, through so many +
trials and tribulations. zoro learns and relearns how to grow stronger—he teaches himself how to cut through metal and how to cut through basically anything. it times when he’s in power, he never once disrespects a fellow swordsman. it’s like he’s never even strayed from his +
values, like they’re part of his breathing. it’s so enticing to watch him grow as a character because he can only get stronger (and hopefully smarter) as the show runs on.
