Things @OleMissRebels could do with $1.15 million, instead of build a landscaped monument to the Confederacy. A thread (1/19) https://twitter.com/DJournalnow/status/1274711261499056128
The lowest paid position on campus has an annualized salary of $22,367 ($10.75/hr x 40 hrs/wk x 52 wks/yr). According to the Poverty and Well-being Profile from the MS State Extension Service, a living wage for a single adult in Lafayette County is $11.55/hr ($24,024 yr). (2/19)
You could take the $1.15 million and give 694 workers a raise of $1,657, getting the roughly 135 who are currently making less than a living wage to that living wage... (3/19)

and another 559 a pay bump--the person getting a pay bump with the highest pay would work out to be at about $36,700/year, roughly the maximum a human resources associate makes. (4/19) https://hr.olemiss.edu/compensation/job-descriptions/
Not to mention how much better you could pay graduate student workers and undergraduate student workers with that money. @CampusWorkersMS (5/19)
But, you might say, the $1.15 million will be a one-time private donation. Workers need to be paid every year. Plus, I’m a donor who wants “my money going to something visible” (is something I assume a donor might say). (6/19)
Fine, I hear there’s dorms that could use some upkeep. (7/19) https://twitter.com/eaton_heaton_up/status/1274757075801968641
If making sure students have suitable living conditions isn’t your thing, the band is attempting to raise money for a new practice field (8/19) https://twitter.com/katieroseoq/status/1274501369672630272
and the University Counseling Center could always use more resources. (9/19) https://twitter.com/_daniel_payne/status/1274163991934308354
Hell, @OleMissRebels is attempting to raise money for all sorts of things through Rebel Aid right now. Or, there’s any number of other fundraising efforts going on, like any number of athletics-related projects. (10/19) https://give.olemiss.edu/where-to-give/
Or, if it’s more your sort of thing, there’s “interior naming opportunities available” for the (“soon” to be constructed) STEM building. (11/19) https://give.olemiss.edu/naming-opportunities/science-and-innovation-institute/
But, if you’re the @OleMissRebels, and in the face of all those “giving opportunities,” the donor(s) says, “Sorry, I really want my money to go toward making the area where the Confederate statue will be relocated look nicer. You know, more of a sacred, shrine-like feel.” (12/19)
Then, it’s pretty easy… you say, “No, thank you. We don’t build landscaped monuments to the Confederacy (anymore). Sorry this didn’t work out.” (13/19) https://twitter.com/JoshuaSSharp/status/1274033414874726400
Because not doing this, is just going to continue to make folks angry. (14/19) https://twitter.com/MSTODAYnews/status/1274075974410346498
