Culturally women are expected to present at a higher standard to have their art appreciated equal to men. It’s a complicated issue, but I’m sad reading people arguing men have to raise their standard and not arguing women be allowed to escape these ridiculous expectations. https://twitter.com/victoriantribe/status/1274167334106775553">https://twitter.com/victorian...
The overall concept of standard needs to be addressed.

I love fashion. I dislike the fashion industry. Clothing is a creative expression and it allows people to express their identity in beautiful ways. I hate how corporations have commodified this to the extent we see today.
@thegreatkhalid , who is only 22, is being dragged for what he was allowed wear on the spontaneous photoshoot. But he should be allowed wear that, if he and @VictoriaMonet agreed it was acceptable. In this case it seemed like it was made out of a lack of options and not ignorance
Victoria does have higher expectations placed upon her - if she showed up to the shoot in what Khalid wore there’s a huge possibility some crew/ producer would enforce a “fix”. But that’s wrong. That’s what we should be fighting against.
Khalid, even in what he wore, was still given a “fix”. The final image seemingly had the intent to erase as much of his outfit in a way to maximise the overall aesthetic of the piece.

Which is their choice - but it’s interesting to take notice of it and question why.
The issue in the shoot was the lack of coherency between the two artists’ style. If she was dressed down, and their combined look suited the music’s vibe, then this would completely work. She’s dressed up to match the music, so his casual aesthetic breaks the harmony.
Artists main focus should be their art. If that’s music, then their music should be what they are judged upon. If it’s music AND fashion, then yes, discussions of their style are expected.

But not every artist should be expected to be a brilliant musician and a fashion icon.
Celebrities are people with feelings too.

Tweets replying to Khalid reinforce capitalist notions of having to signify wealth when one has wealth.

I respect Khalid for confronting this. If celebrities and everyone else did this it would quickly become a more accepting world.
People have pointed out Khalid wore suits at events/ photoshoots in the past as evidence that he should have done better, but they don’t seem to be aware these are possibly rented. Celebrities have entire style teams to maximise their appearance.
If a musician does care about fashion and even is incorporating that into their shows, then power to them!

But as funny as Ed looks here, as a society we should be okay with this. Especially if this was vice versa too, with Beyoncé in a t-shirt and jeans. She’d rock it.
What would be better than expecting women to dress amazingly and letting men dress however they please, is a positive encouragement towards fashion as a compliment to the music. I think @billieeilish has done some fantastic examples of this already.
Clothes are directly tied to status. If you’re a human that’s worn clothes in society, you’ve experienced this. It’s natural to judge someone on how their clothes looks, how it shapes their bodies and sometimes/ sometimes not how much those clothes cost.
A plain white tee, a plain white tee with a fake logo and a plain white tee with a Supreme logo all tell you drastically different things about a person. Depending on context, you will assume if they’re lower, middle or upper class and treat them differently accordingly.
Personally I buy second hand if I can and for the majority of my clothing I aim for items without obvious logos. I like to look good, but is flaunting that you can spend money on expensive brands more important than the possible insecurity it can inflict on those that can’t?
If you like how branded attire makes you feel I am literally a no one to dictate how to dress and how to spend your money. This thread is just hoping to bring attention to the fact supporting the fashion industry has consequences. Which I’m not exempted from - very few of us are.
If anyone has any ethical clothing company recommendations, hit me up.
On that point, fast fashion is super unethical and something I would like to learn more about.

This">https://youtu.be/xGF3ObOBb... is a funny video to learn more about that!
