71 years ago today the Empire Windrush Ship arrived to the UK, bringing 100s of Caribbean people who had been ‘invited’ to provide their labour for the English economy. 71 years later West Indians have enriched many aspects of Britain with it’s culture - food, music and more.
Despite facing racism from British people, the Windrush Scandal in which West Indians have been wrongly detained, denied legal rights and wrongly deported from the UK, and many more obstacles, they have perservered.
Below are some informative resources on the Windrush generation:
Shows:

The Unwanted: The Secret Windrush Files (BBC2) - A documentary exposing the secret files behind the Windrush Scandal
Soon Gone (BBC 4) - A series of monologues revealing experiences of the WG
Books:
Small Island - A story about a couple adjusting to life in Britain, the racism they faced and their resilience
The Windrush Betrayal - An investigation into the Windrush Scandal
The Lonely Londoners - A novel about the Windrush generation experience
- I’d recommend this song too
