The main gripe I hear about careers counselling from people in #AusAg is when a counsellor ignored their passion and interest in ag because they saw it as not having a bright future & instead encouraged them into a safer perceived job-secure path. 1/4
The gov incentivising people to pursue specific degrees because of perceived job growth is just like your shoddy careers counsellor. It won't work. It will make it more challenging for people whose strengths and skills lie in humanities, law, economics & commerce to start out 2/4
Having spent the last few years raising career practitioner’s awareness of the wide range of job opportunities that exist in ag I feel like I can’t really join in ag's "win" in the uni fees announcement, not when it’s coming at a cost for people whose skills ag actually needs ¾
Challenges ag faces; increasing regulation, social licence, attraction and retention of workers, transitioning to a circular economy; require people who have knowledge & skills in the humanities, law, economics, & commerce. These degrees are important for the future of #AusAg 4/4
