I appreciate @AOC's apology.

But that the left's instinct is to be so incredibly enthusiastic about ableism should tell you everything you need to know about why disability policy is so terrible in this country.
33k+ people – human beings – have been killed by #COVID19 in nursing homes. But the proximate cause of their deaths? Federal policy that privileges warehousing disabled human beings in institutions.
We need home and community based, long term services and supports as a matter of right.

Because right now? The only thing you're entitled to is to spend yourself into poverty on care and then have medicaid pay to warehouse you in a SNF.
And it doesn't have to be that way. There's no law of physics that requires we treat disabled human beings as disposable.

No, it's our human-made laws, including laws made by Congress, that treat disabled people as disposable.
And if you don't think the reflexive ableism on display from *gestures broadly* the left has anything to do with that?

I can tell you, as someone who works on this policy area, that you're wrong – so very wrong.
Anyway, @AOC, if you'd like to talk about meaningful disability policy that advances the recognition of disabled people as fully human, have your folks reach out.
You can follow @mattbc.
