Twitter: Positives & Negatives (Thread)
I’ve taken Twitter seriously for 3 months & have learned a ton.
I thought it’d be interesting to share my analysis as a newcomer.
I see obvious positives & negatives about Twitter often, so I’m leaving those out.

Here are my thoughts, sharing only what I’ve rarely/never seen:
Let’s start with the positives +
Let’s start with the positives +
+1: Twitter is the best place to find a tribe for what you do
Most people love Twitter to connect with and learn from experts, but the real value is finding others at your level to work with.
Using Twitter to join a rising tide is a hidden value.

+2: Twitter is at the front of trends
More than any mainstream platform, Twitter is at the leading edge of trends.
It’s definitely because leaders in tech & VC use and engage here like nowhere else.
If you’re on Twitter you have an advantage with emerging opportunities.

+3: Twitter is a note taking system
Bookmarks is a built in database for things you want to note.
Use Twitter to create a storehouse of things you want to learn and work on.
Refer to it often to make sure you’re using the information you’ve saved.

+4: Twitter is a feedback tool
Sharing nuggets of what you’re working on produces low-level feedback that can be incorporated into early phases of work.
It’s valuable since Twitter is often where work is shared in the end.
Seek feedback to make the most of this platform.

Now for some of the negatives...
-1: Twitter is NOT representative of real life
It’s easy to draw market conclusions based on your timeline, but remember, this is curated.
Most people don’t work on improving, don’t follow tech, and don’t have a newsletter.
Don’t mistake Twitter for the general market.

-2: The lifespan of Twitter content is minuscule
Good content is easily swallowed up and passed by on Twitter.
To thrive, you must consistently add value, not just once or twice.
Good content on your feed will fade into obscurity, so point people elsewhere for best value.

-3: DM’s are rough
While a good way to connect, Twitter DM’s need so much work to optimize the value they hold.
It would be great to see something better for group messages and making messages searchable.

-4: Twitter can eat your time
Like any other social platform, Twitter can eat into your working hours.
Growing on Twitter requires constant engagement and it’s easy to focus on Twitter over working on projects.
Twitter is your audience, but not the be-all end-all.

My final thought:
I love Twitter for the connections it creates and for the engaging way to stay at pace with tech/market trends.
But....Twitter can feel exhausting, even at its best.
