When people say “defund the police”, they mean change the system and move that funding around to better the system. I have been studying Neuroscience for 5 years and I still have a couple of years to go before I am considered a “Neuroscientist”.

How can we expect cops to be specialists in a wide range of techniques and scenarios when I have one specialty and I’m not an expert yet?

Require extra training for police officers. Provide extra training. Provide specialized mental health training. Provide intensive de-escalation training for a huge range of scenarios. Fund the hiring of social workers, psychologists and other specialists in the police force.

“Defund the police” meaning stop putting ALL the money into guns, cars and canine units and FUND these resources. That is what it’s about.

No person should call for a wellness check and have the police arrive to shoot them. We need mental health specialists on all of these calls. FUND extra training and special resources so this is possible. This is how lives can be saved.
