There’s a lot of talk about awful behaviour in comedy from men at the moment. About 18mths ago I discovered I was on a bill with a rapist. I had to phone a booker and tell them I wasn’t willing to work with the rapist.
It’s really hard to say that out loud, to question yourself about what you’re doing, to prepare for losing that work, possibly more work. To have complications as a freelancer is to earn less money.
I wasn’t really worried for my safety, I just couldn’t present a smiling bill of entertainment with a rapist. I wasn’t willing and I had to phone up and have a really tough conversation. Anyway, the result was: I got moved off the show.
I believe they have now gone on to stop booking this man, as has much of the comedy industry. But that I got moved, not him, and that it was such a difficult thing to get done shows why this behaviour gets ignored so much. There’s no arbiter or safety net so it’s messy.
