Listen, I’m gunna be honest and say that Abby’s actions were justified just as much as Ellie’s actions were justified. They both lost people because of each other and they want to kill people because of it.
And I understand why we were forced to play as Abby. Neil did it to make us understand the different perspectives involved in the story so we wouldn’t blindly agree with Ellie’s actions and we would take a step back and think about Abby’s as well.
The problem I have though is that I don’t WANT to understand Abby’s actions. I don’t WANT her to have justification for what she did/was doing. But that’s the thing. She does.
I want to sit here and say that Ellie was the only one justified in her revenge but she wasn’t.
What makes me even more upset is that Abby did this to our beloved characters, our core characters, but if we played the first and second game as Abby (for instance if she was always the main character and not Ellie) we’d want her to do what Ellie’s doing.
The characters Owen, Mel, Jerry, Manny, etc. would be just as important to us as Joel, Dina, Jesse, etc. because we would know their personalities and we would be attached to them and I think that’s also why neil did Abby’s perspective for 5 hours of the game.
He was hoping we feel the same way towards Abby’s friends the same way we do with Ellie’s so we can root for Abby to go and kill Ellie’s friends because “Ellie deserved it” just how we feel that “Abby deserves it.”
I just.... sigh.
What makes it hard to agree with Abby is the sense that Ellie is our baby. Joel is our dad. And Abby did this to them. She ruined them. And it’s impossible to allow ourselves to sympathize with her and love her.
Take it with a grain of salt. Im just trying to be more understanding of the story and the theme of the game because if I close myself off to it I’m always going to be mad and angry. I can’t sit here and ignore why ND wrote the story this way because I get why they did.
It’s just.... not what any of us expected at all, despite warnings we got from the cast and crew.
