In Praise of Women on #FathersDay

1/5) My mom missed my birthday once, I COMPLAINED.
Two months later I get a birthday card.

My mom wrote, “You were born 2 months premature & nearly died. I can’t forget your expected birthdate or your birthday.”

She INSPIRES me as a father.

As an #HBCU freshman , I saw Miss @JacksonStateU Janice Broome.

All the power of prayer could not keep me from staring . Once my shallow brain caught up with my eyes, I realized she was more brilliant & kind than beautiful. Later she made me a better husband & father.

My Great Grandmother Rosa Belle Suber took care of her elderly father-in-law Rev. Pompey Lavallie —who had been enslaved as a boy. She even made a quilt of his britches, which I slept under as a boy. As a dad, I have tried to teach my sons to honor their elders. @Essence

This is the quilt which my great grandmother made from my great great grandfather’s pants or britches. To say that #BlackLivesMatter must mean that we honor ourselves. I only wish I could wish my great great grandfather happy Father’s Day.

Everything I’ve learned from my grandmothers, aunts, mother, the mother figures, sister role models and, of course, my wife make me want to be an excellent father to these little boys, who are now young men. #HappyFathersDay2020
