A thread of creative poetry ideas that I shared yesterday at #BrewEdTheArts for anyone who would like them

1. Introduce children to lots of different poets, poetry collections and magazines.
Have a 'Poem of the Day' and let the children doodle the poem or pick their favourite word.
Choose one child to be 'Poet of the Week' and let them pick that week's poems.

2. Let children create their own 'Poetry Journal' to gather ideas and inspiration to use in their own poetry writing.

3. Become 'Word Collectors'
Collect lots and lots of words and phrases from old magazines and newspapers and let children play with words to create their own 'Flash Poetry.'

4. Use photos, pictures, illustrations and children's own artwork as inspiration for poems.
Use the images to write on or with post-its or recycled words to build children's confidence in creating their own poetry.

5. Create poetry collages and books combining recycled materials to help children explore how words, colour, texture, patterns and images can work together to produce beautiful art and poetry.

6. Explore alliteration using sweetie lolli-sticks and make a 'Poem in a Bag' full of delicious alliteration.
Making a 3D, list poem like this lifts poetry of the page and into children's imagination.
This activity would work well with Space, Oceans or Rainforest topics.

7. Make space-themed illustrated or collage 'Recipe Books' of acrostic poems using 'Space' ingredients.
Try....
Moon Muffins
Crater Cookies
Planet Pancakes or
Star Scones

8. Explore onomatopoeia with a 'Noisy Tin' and create acrostic poems which explain.....
'What the Rocket said' (Whoosh)
'What the Leopard said' (Roar)
'What the Clock said' (Tick Tock)
My poem 'The Woof Translator could be used as an example.

9. Use paint chip cards to help children discover new, descriptive, innovative ways to write about colours. They could colour-match their own artwork or recycled images to create colourful poems.
