#NickHytner & #KristinScottThomas. Thank you for your well-intentioned comments about the crisis facing the arts but once again hearing about the West End, ballet, opera and the big theatres makes those of us working in small-scale theatre #Marr
#NickHytner #KristinScottThomas #Marr participatory arts, outdoor arts feel unseen & undervalued. "The panto season is when families go to the theatre" - no, they go all year round & not just to panto at Christmas. I know you're trying to speak the language the politicians ....
#NickHytner #KristinScottThomas #Marr ... will understand (and you did mention freelancers) but there is a massive part of the theatre ecostructure that you didn't reference. It's getting tiring and tiresome!!
I also fully recognise that the loss of income from "panto season" (& I know that's shorthand used by theatres) is likely to be the death knell for some (many?) theatres but I don't feel it negates the points about reflecting the entire theatre ecostructure. #Marr
And, of course, having grown up in Scotland, studied drama in Hull, living in Cardif, having made work in Cardiff, Barry, Abergavenny, Anglesey, Glasgow, Mold, Darlington, Derby, Newry, Rochdale and beyond theatre is made and takes place all over the UK.
I am a freelance theatre-maker who has worked in theatre buildings in London & elsewhere and for touring companies large & small. I know how inextricably linked they all are, so I'm not setting things up in opposition, I would just like the discourse to reflect that.
Even a single sentence that mentioned "The theatre or arts centre on your doorstep may close ... as may the youth theatre or dance group your teenager attends ... the singing group your mum with Alzheimer's gains so much from" would have saved me having to Tweet!
