An observation: many Chinese students who are CCP-sympathetic came to the US with a particular pride as "cultural ambassadors." Then they had to confront the drab reality that people simply don't care about mobile payment apps or mystic oriental wisdom.
They conclude that Americans are "hostile" and, their feelings hurt, easily fall back to nationalism. This seems to be a pretty unique dynamic. Europeans are also proud of their culture, but those who study in the US look like a self-selective and relatively Americanized group.
I'd say the national education in China grooms them well with this purpose, with a lot of highfalutin nonsense about the 5000-year-civilization stuff. Yet as they expound on "Chinese characteristics" they don't seem to have a good grasp of what "American characteristics" are
