Maybe bookstores closing down have more to do with how inaccessible and expensive books are rather than Malaysians not reading...?
Stop shitting on Malaysians for not reading when books are inaccessible for so many of them. They're expensive, and our local libraries are so understocked and difficult to get to.
I'm not sure why this blew up but thanks for coming to my TED Talk????

Also if you want to read but are on a tight budget, I've linked some resources in this thread:

I've muted this thread but I also want to add some stuff re: BookXcess.

I don't think it's fair to compare BX to the other bookstores (MPH, Popular, Kino, etc) since their models are *completely* different.
BX buys old/excess book stock in bulk, which allows them to sell them off at much, much cheaper prices. That's how you get seemingly *new* books for such good prices.

Meanwhile, books at your typical bookstore are new releases & new prints - hence, they are sold at regular price
Both types of bookstores have their benefits, and I'm glad for BX bcs it allows more Malaysians to get their hands on books!

But also, just be aware that it's like comparing apples to oranges when you talk about BX vs mainstream bookstores.
(Also authors don't earn when you buy a copy from BX. It's pretty much like buying a secondhand copy, but it looks new when it's from BX!)

(ALSO don't go to BX or BBW and harass their staff for newly released books!!! They won't have it.)
