spoilers for the 61st chapter of the dbs' manga.

ever since the chapter came out, people raised a few points for how vegeta is badly written here, so i wanna look at the key moments i see people bring up and see how they reflect his character?

long thread but pls bear with me
the first one is from this page, where piccolo says that vegeta never underestimates his opponents.

the problem comes from the fact that a large flaw of vegeta's has always been his pride overtaking his senses when he fights, making him believe he can fight off stronger--
opponents without a plan (frieza, perfect cell, jiren, etc).

though, as far as i remember, and feel free to correct me, vegeta never actually made the mistake of underestimating his opponents, but rather made the mistake of overestimating how strong he is in comparison--
he actively acknowledged his opponents' strength, his pride just tended to overtake him, deluding him into thinking he's stronger than them, regardless of how strong they actually are.

like with cell, after cell became perfect, everyone was terrified at the level of power--
cell reached, vegeta is the only one seen smiling. not because he can't acknowledge how strong cell has gotten, but because he's so sure of himself that it doesn't matter how strong cell is.

he didn't underestimate cell, just overestimated himself in comparison to cell--
another issue i've seen around my tl is came because of this panel, the idea is that vegeta already went through his "existential" arc in the buu saga, where he was "reborn" and started anew, and should have moved past his mistakes as an antagonist since they're long past him--
he never actually got closure from the namekians he's hurt, and a huge part of vegeta's arc in this ongoing story is because he had to go to namek, where the namekians are, to help them stop moro, for the first time ever since he's tortured them, so he was around the very same--
people he's tortured and even killed for his quest for power. coming to terms with your guilt isn't the same as getting over it.

he's never given or gotten closure. most people can't move past a huge mistake they've made without at least apologizing, but he didn't even do that.
he's come to terms with what he did, and he knows he's not that person anymore, but that doesn't change the fact that there was a time where he was on namek going all blade runner on that planet's citizens, and he never had the chance to make amends for that. now their lives--
are in danger, and he wants to save them because he feels like it's his responsibility to pay them back, after what he's done to them previously.

as for the "at the end of the day, i'm a villain." line, i never saw the problem w/it, either? he came to terms with what he did--
but even when he asked for closure in an earlier chapter, one of the namekians said that it would be hard, if not impossible, to forgive him for what he did to them.

he knew that, so he understood that he may never get that closure, and that's okay. he's not entitled to it.
vegeta is showing his development as a character in this arc. he knows he may not earn their forgiveness, but he's okay with it, because this isn't about him. it stopped being about him a long time ago. it's about the those he's hurt, and how he's now risking his life for them.
