fraternity culture is rape culture. the greek life system is designed in a way that makes everyone, especially girls, reliant on frat boys if they want to party and socialize. frats collectively use this social capital to objectify, coerce, abuse, and then silence women.

fraternity men are 3x more likely than non-fraternity men to commit rape. sorority girls are 74% more likely to experience sexual assault in college. greek life as a whole has allowed rapists a safe place where they can get away with anything and everything.

the greek life system is inherently sexist. it holds different rules for sororities so that frats can have power over them. sororities can't throw parties so they have to go to frat houses to fulfill their social needs. it requires them to go into the home of rapists and abusers.

the social pressure that fraternities impose leads most victims to stay silent. 27% of women are sexually assaulted in college, but 88% of those women do not report it. if they do, they run the risk of being ostracized and shunned by the frats who blindly support their brothers

this is why a large percentage of sexual assault cases on college campuses are repeat offenders. the greek life culture tells frat boys that it's ok to rape and abuse women because there will be no consequences, so they will continue to do it more and more

colleges are largely to blame for this as well. they all have a history of covering up rape allegations, because rape allegations are bad publicity, and bad publicity is bad for donations. schools care more about protecting their wallets than protecting their women

frats are also inherently racist. they were founded for rich white people to try to maintain segregation within schools. they are still 95% white, and clearly tailored towards white people. they claim to be inclusive but clearly isolate non-white people consistently

ask white women how many times they've been rejected at the doors of a frat party, and then ask Black girls the same question. Greek Life is the driving source of social life on campuses, yet it is almost entirely tailored towards white people

let's not forget that sororities are part of the problem. i saw a vandy girl post on her story saying some shit like "i see people posting about BLM who make POC feel uncomfortable on campus"

another point i didn’t mention but is definitely a big deal is the hazing that occurs in greek life. there has been a hazing related death in frats every year since 1969. hazing in many cases literally includes physical and psychological torture

many will say “they agree to it” or that they can just not rush, but that’s not the point. other people’s desire to fit in at college is not an excuse to assume dominance over them and torment them for 6 weeks. hazing is disgusting and in many cases illegal

the worst part is, the arguments in favor of greek life are terrible. “it gave me a community” ok but it also excludes many others. “we donate to charity” you don’t need your frat to require you to donate to charity to be a good person. there’s actually no reason for greek life
