The person behind this obnoxious tweet is G Sampath, a typical urban naxal. Used to be a no-hoper on the copydesk of DNA India, Mumbai. Unfortunately, I helped create this monster. Thread on how it happened.
1. During the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack, there was an article in DNA
2. ....about one of the 10 Pakistani terrorists knocking on the door of a house in one of Mumbai's alleys. When the head of the household opened the door, the Paki asked for water. After drinking the water, the Pakistani shot the man dead in front of his little daughter.
3. Wanting to support the dead man's family by paying for the girl's education, I called the DNA copydesk in Mumbai to get the reporter's phone number to get in touch with the family. The person who picked up the phone was G Sampath.
4. He said he would pass on my number to the reporter and ask her to call me. The reporter, Deepa Suryanarayan, never did. I called DNA several times but the reporter was never in the office. However, Sampath was always in and we kept in touch via email.
5. While scanning the Mumbai papers, trying to get more info about the dead man, whose name was Thakur Waghela, I came across a blog article in DNA. It was a nicely written piece and at the bottom of it was G Sampath's name.
6. Emailed him, saying it was an excellent article and that he should stop wasting his life on the copy desk. Told him to get into reporting because that's where all the excitement was. His reply below 👇🏼
7. This is what I told him: "You will enjoy life outside India but you will miss the three great Indian Fs - family, friends, food. And it will make you feel homesick a lot. In the Far East, where you are going, meat and its smell are everywhere."
8. My advice clearly dissuaded G. Sampath from making the move to Hong Kong. He emailed back, saying he was having second thoughts about it. 👇🏼
9. Tried to motivate him to quit the copydesk and become a full time writer. In fact, advised him to move to Delhi, where my friends in senior editorial positions in Lutyens Delhi would help him. 👇🏼
10. G. Sampath's non existent writing career started at this point. His interest perked up after reading my email on how much fun, perks and rewards reporters get from their job. The fact is most people on the copydesk have no idea reporting is a great job. His reply 👇🏼
11. Emailed him the phone number of a Lutyens Delhi editor, my friend, who had hired dozens of people recommend by me. G Sampath moved out of DNA India soon, and that's the last I heard from him.
12. After seeing his hateful tweet about our martyred soldiers, I was felt awful that I had inadvertently helped create an enemy of the Indian nation. Such are the perils of helping strangers. The coward leftist seems to have either deactivated his account or blocked me.
