Yesterday I learned that friend and colleague Dr. Nancy Squires, senior instructor in @OregonStateMIME, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday.

This is a huge loss, both personally and professionally.

Nancy is quite simply one of the best teachers I’ve ever known, and also one of the best humans.

She won the @OregonStateMIME teaching award so often we jokingly referred to it as the annual “Nancy Squires Teaching Award”.

Amazingly, this was Nancy’s *second* career. She retired in 2005 from the aerospace industry, to come teach here.

Since then, she has taught more & more diverse courses than anyone else, and served as faculty advisor for @OregonStateAIAA and countless student projects.

Nancy was also the heart and brains behind the growing aerospace engineering program in @OregonStateMIME, starting as a minor for mechanical engineering students.

I/we will do our best to continue building this, but she is irreplaceable in so many ways.

Personally, I wish I had learned more from her. She gave me her teaching materials for the undergrad numerical methods course that I still teach regularly, and while I’ve continued to make it my own, I still use elements from her, including a fun Apollo orbit problem.

@OregonStateMIME is going to be a bit less bright without Nancy. The hallway outside our offices would always fill with students waiting to see her.

When we ran into each other, Nancy would always stop and chat—occasionally for a while—and always end by telling me to have a wonderful day.

So, I’m very sad. But also thankful for the chance to work with and get to know her over the last seven years.

Well, I’m officially crying again after seeing this video for Nancy put together by @SoundingRocket
