Since I know most of the raggedy rich bitches at WashU don’t consider service staff worthy of a conversation, let me make a quick thread of “WashU culture” and what I have heard from low income students and our wonderful staff (also dining staff) #Washu #wustl #washu24 https://twitter.com/SocioDrew/status/1274412218684186624
1) my wonderful housekeeper of two years told me that she doesn’t make enough at her job to survive and has a second one despite working a full 40 here. Why? Her sons are in high school and she’s hoping by staying on at wustl they’ll get free tuition!! #WashU #Wustl
2) already said this: https://twitter.com/perf_maddie/status/1274453551494959104?s=21 https://twitter.com/Perf_Maddie/status/1274453551494959104
3) working in the DUC is seen as a privilege, if a dining services worker gives a student too large of a portion, they are threatened with being sent to BD and getting shittier hours. This is how WashU students think it’s okay to act and speak about workers:
4) remember how the SoFoHo elevator smelled like piss a bunch for a year? That’s bc folks were knowingly pissing in it and thought it was funny,, also someone was leaving literal shit around lee ! Who the fuck do y’all think cleans that up?
5) sources have told me when grad workers voted on whether to unionized, international students were told they’d have their visas revoked if they voted yes
6) additionally, washu’s graduate school changed the policy so if grad workers take parental leave (maternity+paternity) they forfeit their funding for the time they’re away. it used to be a delay on the funding but now it’s fully just forfeited
7) since this thread is just exposing WashU let me say a friend and I set our tinders to 30+ to find WashU profs actively seeking 19yo women. A friend matched with Michele Boldrin, economic prof who knew she was a student, messaged her and asked her on a date, and is well known +
as a racist and sexual predator. StudLife actively helped cover this up when my friend approached them for help exposing this (with screenshots of these interactions) and she’s afraid to go public bc she’s a low income BWOC.
Back to point 5) @WashUGradWkrs linked this article for the thread! Thank you 💕

8) I worked for the WUSTL call center for 2yrs. I was paid incredibly well under RNL, but when MO law changed WashU decided to rehire student workers and pay them LESS with minimal incentives.
Went from making 9/h + bonuses totaling 1.50/h to 9.25/h with $50 flat bonus.
They claimed it was the same (it was not and numerous employees took pay hits)
I was also verbally abused by alumni who said “poor students aren’t heard to the same standards as full pay” despite WashU being NEED AWARE
9) CW: suicide
Let’s talk about washu’s problem with suicide! I know of -multiple- attempts by students not talked about in any meaningful way. If you’re a student it’s a norm to know at least 2-3 students who took medical LOA for suicidal intention.
CW: suicide
One of my friends was incredibly at risk for suicide and asked HABIF to transfer to see a psychiatrist there. They turned her down so I reported her to WashU cares, where I expressed how afraid I was for her safety. No one followed up with me or her.
CW: Suicide
Let me repeat that:
WashU has had at least 5 student deaths by suicides since 2015, multiple attempts that were never publicized, and when we tried to get help for my friend, we were ignored by TWO entities #wustl #washu #washu24 #washu23 #washu22
Let me say here I’m a low-income student with disabilities, and I don’t have the same experiences as everyone here. Feel free to dm me with your stories (current students and alumni) and I will post them anonymously for you!
10) numerous employees of WashU are hired for 37.5 hours. Weird number, right? That’s bc they can be considered part-time and don’t receive full benefits 👀👀👀
11) Things I’ve heard from students
“I’m full pay so they have to treat me better than scholarship students”
“We’re a full-pay family”
+ numerous others of the like. If you are a low-income student here you will be microagressed every single day.
Quick break from shitting on WashU to say I’ve had numerous positive interactions here so thank you to ArtSci’s academic advisors, folks in disabilities resources, financial aid ✨, and more 💕
12) When WashU agreed to raise their employment wage (after the hard work and action of unions and staff), student workers were excluded from that. Additionally, WashU consistently uses students as free labor, like Uncle Joe’s, EST, Sarah, so on. From a dm:
13) WUPD
-has verbally abused and threatened friends when we called for -medical- help
-supports Clayton/Ucity police with armed officers
-also here’s a quick thread about Jennifer, a black MSW student, being silenced by the brown school! PLEASE READ:
https://twitter.com/emmarose739/status/1228107643115524097?s=21 https://twitter.com/emmarose739/status/1228107643115524097
14) all from a friend about her experience being low-income at WashU
15) Microagression and racism in Washu’s performing arts department:
16) Alfred Darnell, who teaches Asian-American studies courses, said that “The model minority myth is positive racism”, he (a white man) has been profiled by police, and cited his Indian wife to make himself an authority IN HIS RACE AND ETHNICITY IN AMERICAN POLITICS CLASS
17) From a submission:
CW: suicide, ed
Let me add on another friend said that when they pursued ED treatment at habif and attempted to start a support group in 2017, they were told no (since then I believe that have started)
18) more submissions:
-WashU has allowed STLPD to store riot gear in campus owned housing
-allowed for islamaphobia
20) Jonathan Katz oh boy oh boy. Someone suggested I add him on Katz is racist, misogynistic, “a proud homophobe”, and current WashU Professor ((he’s tenured))
21) more student submissions !
22) also throwing it out there that WashU has a secret society with abusive tendencies and special privileges http://wupeopleshistory.weebly.com/what-is-red-bones-a-brief-qa.html
This got off track but let me reiterate: WashU has a culture of treating service staff terribly, from actively exposing them to their bodily fluids to things as small as never, ever saying thank you to the people who aid them.
23) from a Sam fox student
Okay! I’ve gotten a lot of messages so let me add some things
-I apologize for targeting StudLife, my friend clarified it was more a policy/person she worked with specific thing and I received a very nice/supportive message from current staff. In general pro-Studlife here !
-a student reached out to me and wouldn’t like specifics shared but wanted people to know that the university does next to nothing for friends/roommates around student suicide.
24) here’s some more submissions from students!
CW: sexual assault
25) “but if we defund WUPD who will-“
26) from another submission, this student was assaulted by a frat’s security officer and no one stood up to him or condoned his behavior
27) another student submission!
28) also to those who’ve shared their stories with me but didn’t want them shared publically/those who have stories but haven’t shared them for any reason: you didn’t deserve to be treated that way, I’m so sorry these things happened, and I support you 💕
29) Submission from an alumnist
Linking a follow up to #15 https://twitter.com/theoffordcomma/status/1274851332365705216?s=21 https://twitter.com/theoffordcomma/status/1274851332365705216
Another follow up to #15 this specific designer no longer works with the PAD, but others have voiced broader issues
30) a submission from a student corroborating Richard Williams’s behavior
31) another submission from a student also since I haven’t tagged the thread in a while #washu #washu21 #washu22 #washu23 #washu24 #wustl
32) hi everyone! a fellow student put together some pictures of the trustees in case you’re interested in seeing the people behind the constantly referenced board !!

@_gmacarthur_ put this together and also sent me this from the people’s history of washu, from 2015 ! Andrew Taylor is still on the board of trustees
