Sometimes it’s not even the celebrity comic. Over 10 years ago I featured for Faizon Love at the Brea Improv. After my set someone from his entourage asked me if I wanted to feature for him on the road. I said it would depend on the details.
This guy said all bookings go through him so he grabbed me by the back of my hair and started pulling me towards the green room. Dragging me! Faizon is on stage and one of his cronies is attempting to assault me. Luckily I’m 5’8” and a tough broad.
What if I wasn’t? What if I didn’t know to step on his foot as he was pulling me back? What if I didn’t know to use my body weight against him and get out of the strong hold of my hair he was using against me?
Luckily I did. I was 6 weeks pregnant at the time so the fear that someone could hurt me was even more traumatizing. I left immediately and didn’t even stop to get paid for my spot. That’s why we can’t applaud male comics who brag about raping or abusing
Women whether they did or not. Whether it’s to score cool points in the green room, whether it’s on a podcast or on stage. You’re telling your fans, you’re telling your listeners that WE DON’T MATTER. Our dreams don’t matter. Our goals don’t matter.
Some of these comics have daughters!!! I have a daughter. F*ck you and your dated Bro mentality. Keep perpetuating this small dick behavior. Let me know when your daughters grow up and tell you a story like mine and so many others. Then they look at you and say
Daddy, I had someone tell me to suck their dick so I could pursue my dreams. Why did you tell them that it’s ok? Why did you allow this?
