Mask redux - 7 part thread. First: Politicization: Masks are not a Right-Left issue. Wearing a mask in a grocery store or on public transit helps protect you and others. Good sense, good citizenship.
Second, Equity. Key issue. Someone can& #39;t afford a mask, or is rushing to do gig work to support a family struggling on a low income, forgets to mask, & is barred from going on public transit. Logical Rx: Key service providers mandated to keep stock of disposable masks on hand.
Third, Location. Duh. No, don& #39;t do it everywhere. Everyone feels oppressed as it is. Target the hot spots. Mayors step up. Provinces help with mask supplies for essential services. Retailers provide masks out of enlightened self-interest if entry w/o mask is a no-no.
Fourth, Enforcement. Please, no stupid Toronto-style mega-ticketing of individuals. The penalty is non-entry, mitigated by mandated stocking for essential services & self-interested stocking by retailers. (Push big chains hard: lots of traffic = temptation to turn people away.)
Fifth, Common Sense. Um, no, this doesn& #39;t apply to those seated in restaurants/cafes! Good separation needed. And yes, some jerks will keep turning up to public transit w/o masks to get a freebie. That& #39;s a small cost.
In sum, mandates, enforcement, and incentives focus on those who control access to the settings. Geo-locations selective (duh again). Canadians by & large have been brilliantly compliant. Don& #39;t whack individuals. Just help everyone to do better.
Caveats: One aging idiot& #39;s view. No political allegiances. No endorsements implied by any institution, agency, group. Oscar the border collie should not be blamed for any errors, omissions, or transgressions. Debate/dissent welcome, but I& #39;m done with this topic for now!
