As a lot of you know I'm a keen advocate of liveable neighbourhoods and an important component of this is how walkable your local amenities are e.g. your supermarket. Because, realistically if your supermarket is further than 15 minutes away you'll probably want to drive... /1
I was curious to see how much of Oxford was a 15 minute walk away from a supermarket. So using @Geolytix retail points dataset and @openstreetmap data I've spent the afternoon generating an Isomap Area Map for Oxford using @qgis and the very neat QNEAT3 network analysis plugin /2
I then visualised the results onto @OrdnanceSurvey Zoomstack District buildings polygons and the end result looks pretty good! As expected a lot of the city is within 15 minutes of a supermarket but there are some blind spots /3
These correspond with the most deprived parts of the city; Blackbird Leys, Cowley and Barton. And probably contributes to making these places less desirable to live in and locking in car dependency in more deprived areas. /4
On the other hand, Parktown in a much more affluent part of the city is also a supermarket desert... this is an interesting one as it seems an ideal location for a supermarket with a large area which either has to travel to the city centre or Summertown for their groceries /5
