I'm going to post screenshots because I don't want you to be tempted to click the article and give them ad revenue, but we need to talk about @TheBabylonBee, which has long been mean-spirited and not at all funny, but has taken this moment in time to dial down HARD on its racism.
For those of you unfamiliar with it, it's a site that purports to be the Christian version of @TheOnion. It used to mostly mock evangelical culture, but it has also always been pretty obviously bigoted. Years ago, I literally lost a "friend" by asking him not to post their stuff.
They were recently accused of a racist bent because of this article, which was also misogynist (which was not news to those of us aware of its existence).
Within the past 24 hours, they have not only posted that racist piece about @ChickfilA, they've also mocked those who were offended by it.
And they also put out a video, which I took screen shots of, mocking those offended by racial stereotypes like Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, the Land o' Lakes former logo of an indigenous woman, etc.
More "satire."
I have tried to locate all of the people who write for @TheBabylonBee. I was totally unsurprised that all I found were white guys of a certain age. Here are some of their Twitter bios.
Kyle Mann is the editor-in-chief. He left the pastorate in order to run this website for the nurturing of white male rage and resentment through mockery.
Here are more writers you should be aware of.
I will not say they are "not Christian;" such distancing is a way of not taking responsibility. Instead, I would encourage those of you who are Christians to reach out to these fellows to point out where they have, very obviously, gone wrong, as is your duty.
I rarely throw verses at people, but this is a moment in which I believe it is warranted. The New Testament literally urges us to shun people like this.
Romans 16:17: "I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them."
Titus 3:10-11: "Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them. You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful; they are self-condemned."
Also within the past 24 hours, they mocked those seeking to pressure sports franchises to drop names that slur Native Americans. Sorry I missed that one, because there was SO MUCH to choose from. It's no coincidence that they also sneer at the @washingtonpost in the same breath.
And they mocked the very idea of repentance. (See the whole squirrel thing above.)
This is a common way for right-wing evangelicals to dismiss #BlackLivesMatter , so they didn't even come up with this one on their own. It's not even original.
If you do write to them, though, prepare yourself. You will get an infuriating response.
Thanks to @chris_journo for pointing me to this other white male writer for the Babylon Bee. https://twitter.com/chris_journo/status/1274370550748585984
Seriously: They will not hear you. The biblically mandated response is shunning.
I found a few more writers to be aware of.
I know this thread is messy, but I want to include things where I can for those (like me) who are choosing not to click on the articles, and this is as good a place as any to put this. https://twitter.com/spulliam/status/1274322464533819394
