In Gujarati, older folk will often ask "taari ayu su che?" , meaning what's your age. This "ayu" is the same as in Ayu-rveda meaning life, age, duration of life, living being kind of.

"Chyavanprash" name comes from a Rishi Chyavana who is attributed as the first preparer (or receiver from the Gods). #TIL

Chyavanprash also boosts the immunity, so good for these #COVID times. :)
"समदोषः समाग्निश्च समधातु मलःक्रियाः। प्रसन्नात्मेन्द्रियमनः स्वस्थइतिअभिधीयते॥" - the definition of health by Acharya Sushruta, key person behind Ayurveda.
It means When the Doshas (vaat, pit, kafa), Agni (digestive & other?), Dhatu (body tissue, there are 7 types), Mala (excretion) functions are balanced. Mind, Senses and Atma are all pleasant. Then it's called Health.
Interesting,

The Tridosha: Kapha, Pitta, Vata corelate to Creation, Maintenance, Destruction in that order. 😃

There are symbolic co-relations between the tridosha and Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh.

Ojas is acknowledged in Ayurveda. Until now only read in spiritual books.

It's supposed to be reddish yellow in color. I always pictured it as white. Purity and all that.

Not sure if it has something to do with the saffron / yellow that a lot of monk orders adopt.
"Ayurveda is not a science of curing diseases. It is a science of keeping you healthy so you don't get diseases" :)
Lot of in-depth knowledge about food and lifestyle has been compiled it seems.
And yes, I am doing a course on Ayurveda.
Really enjoying it so far. And this food bit is the main purpose I am doing the course. So I can adhere to healthier food choices in a personalized way after understanding my system. :)
Now onto sleep. This course isn't going into the depth I would like. There is apparently a level 2 course in works...

But for now I can augment with other free online resources which are amply available.

I searched a lot of resources and it seems from Indian schools, this course is the best bet. Kaivalyadhama is a very old and respected school.

The other options are foreigners on Udemy. They may be knowledgeable (respect)... But the lack of native sanskrit/Indic feel.
In Ayurveda, to maintain health, there are three pillars (tray upa sthamba) - food, sleep and lifestyle.

There are apparently different types of sleep which are classified. But this course doesn't go in depth. Have to dig some online resource and understand further.
But so cool that different types of sleep have been classified!

The sleepy feeling that happens after we eat food is due to increase in kafa..called kafa-nidra. 😀
Much importance is given in Ayurveda to the taste of foodstuff. It is interesting. Each taste is ascribed an impact on the doshas.
Interesting to corelate with traditional Indian foods which boast of a mix of tastes brought together.

Like Gaathiya-Jalebi Gujju snack:
sweet, salty, sour, pungent all packed in one traditional combo.

Interesting lecture on mapping Ayurvedic understanding with the different allopathy fields.
After meals, 100 step walking is recommended for better digestion.

40% course done.

Rainy season is when the digestive fire is the weakest. So eat easily digestible foods, maintain the timings better and other healthy habits. :)
Would have liked to understand more about the diet specifications (practical applications). But the course has now moved into Ayurvedic Anatomy.

Ayurveda students actually learn anatomy on cadavers similar to allopathic students. Interesting.
(not me in this online course) no cadavers here. :D
Anatomy section almost over. 2 more lectures on the essence of the sapta dhatu in our body. Then onwards to Kayachikitsa. 😃
Note the "sapta dhatu" as in Nirvana Shatkam - na me sapta dhatu, na va pancha koshaha :)
Random learning: Withholding natural urges like yawns, urine, farts etc.. leads to many diseases over time. Women especially prone to withholding urine.
13 such natural urges have been identified. Physical ones.
yawn, urine, vomit, fart, eat, defecate, sleep, sneeze, cough, burp, breath, cry, ejaculation.

Mental/emotional ones are also considered - envy, jealousy, anger etc.. should not be held on to. Let it go!
Started the KayaChikitsa lesson.
Earlier I thought this wasn't too relevant for me cause I didn't plan on consulting or anything. But it is super relevant.

Started first chapter with 6 stages of disease manifestation. 😮 Super.
